At a recent Micron analyst event I heard Andrew McAfee from MIT talk about analysis from his recent book, More from Less . The basic premise of the book is that a fundamental change has taken place between the use of physical resources and improvement of the human condition, particularly measured by GDP (the total value of goods produced and services provided per year).
While in the past human progress was tied to use of physical resources, in recent history human progress is happening with the use of fewer total resources. McAfee refers to this trend as dematerialization.
