Whenever I have the opportunity to coach or mentor someone on their career journey, I recommend a practice that has helped me in more ways than one: ‘Always be interviewing.’
It sounds counterintuitive and time-consuming to interview for new roles when you enjoy your job or feel lucky to be employed during a pandemic. This practice isn’t about thinking the grass might be greener on the other side. It is more about avoiding looking for new roles when you are more eager or desperate to get out of your current role. While consistent interviewing requires a bit of time and dedication, it has allowed me to navigate my career in a more intentional way and exposed a few unintended benefits along the way.
