Spring into Jobs: Tech Series (April 2023)

*Don’t miss the great list of tech-adjacent companies with opportunities below.*

While some big tech companies have been in the news for layoffs, these recent layoffs follow some of the fastest hiring we’ve ever seen; and the shifts reflect adjustments to changes in consumer demand as we return to more normal business operations. There are still plenty of opportunities to transform the future of business in tech. We remain in close communication with our tech industry company partners, who have indicated they are moving forward with recruiting and seeking candidates from across our portfolio of degree programs. Regardless of your target company, keep networking and making connections: this puts you in the pipeline for future opportunities.

TECH-ADJACENT CAREER PATHS
In the spirit of moving toward opportunities, we want to share an avenue of exploration for those on a “Dirt Road” or “Jungle” job search in Tech this spring: tech-adjacent career paths.

Tech is a major career path for Sloanies – from big tech to hybrid-tech and startups. And within this landscape, MIT Sloan students are uniquely prepared to join tech-adjacent organizations. Tech-adjacent companies combine Tech with another industry, and often transform one or both industries. The broad knowledge and industry expertise Sloanies gain from working and learning experiences across multiple industries can help them lead transformation in tech-adjacent industries such as FinTech, Healthtech, AgTech, CleanTech, and more.

SLOANIES IN TECH-ADJACENT ROLES
Sloanies are wired to lead industry disruption and technology expansion. In 2022, 12% went to tech-adjacent industries, including Biobot Analytics, Motional, MyForest Foods, and Spotify. Some of these companies are MIT spinouts, such as Quaise Energy, whose goal is to create universal access to geothermal energy through disruptive millimeter wave drilling technology; and Biobot Analytics, which develops cutting-edge technology to transform wastewater systems into public health observatories.
