Key Takeaways from Jeremy Schifeling’s Webinar: “LinkedIn & AI for Job Searching: 10X Your Chances of Success” | MBA Career Peers Series

On October 29, 2024, MIT Sloan CDO hosted a session called “LinkedIn & AI for Job Searching: 10X Your Chances of Success” with former LinkedIn insider and early OpenAI partner, Jeremy Schifeling.

Below are my key takeaways:

Recruiters and Technology: Recruiters often rely on technology (applicant tracking systems, or ATS) to screen resumes, making it essential to optimize your application with relevant keywords from the job description. Schifeling recommends using AI tools to identify these critical skills and phrases and integrating them into your LinkedIn profile and resume. Meeting at least 50% of the job requirements can increase your likelihood of standing out in a recruiter’s search.

Resume Essentials: Keep your resume simple – applicant tracking systems are better equipped to process a traditional format than a resume with more elaborate formatting. Also keep your resume concise—ideally 1-2 pages—as studies indicate that recruiters tend to prefer a two-page format. (While here at Sloan, the CDO recommends a 1-page format to align with MIT Sloan resume guidelines.) .

Finding Referrals: Establishing a strong network within your desired companies is a powerful advantage. The hiring manager is often the most influential figure in the hiring process, so try to connect with them directly through referrals. Presenting yourself as both competent and approachable can enhance your chances of making a memorable impression, which is crucial for standing out.

Engagement with the Hiring Team: Schifeling encourages using AI tools to generate STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) responses for potential interview questions, allowing you to demonstrate your qualifications and fit more effectively. Practice using AI interview tools and recording yourself, to understand how your audience views you.

Career Alignment: Schifeling advocates for a purpose-driven approach to job searching. He suggests using tools like CareerBot (which he is offering for free to Sloanies!) to identify roles aligned with your goals and to create a roadmap for achieving them. Inspired by Steve Jobs’ philosophy of making an impact, Schifeling encourages job seekers to pursue careers that are meaningful and aligned with their personal aspirations.
