To develop a relationship with an alum, start by sending a brief thank you message after the event. When reaching out, mention one specific takeaway from the conversation that was valuable to you. Keep the message focused on appreciation and stay in touch.
If you already spent 15-20 minutes with the alum during a breakout session or group conversation, there is usually no immediate need to ask for another one-on-one chat. At this point, do not ask about job openings, referrals, or opportunities directly. Instead, give the relationship time with the goal of building a genuine professional relationship first.
A good reason to reconnect later is when you have made meaningful progress and would like feedback on something specific, such as your interview preparation, technical skills, or career decisions.
