Become an MIT Sloan Industry Advisor (SIA)
Share your experience with MIT Sloan students and alumni through one-on-one career conversations.
The MIT Sloan Industry Advisor (SIA) Program connects MIT Sloan alumni with students and other alumni for one-on-one career conversations. SIAs provide industry perspective, candid career advice, and insight into professional paths, helping members of the MIT Sloan community explore options, prepare for next steps, and build meaningful connections across the alumni network.

Why become a Sloan Industry Advisor?
- Make a Meaningful Impact, on Your Schedule: Share your experience and perspective through focused, one-time conversations that help students and other alumni better understand industries, functions, and career transitions.
- Stay Connected to the MIT Sloan Community: Re-engage with the school, connect with current students and fellow alumni, and remain part of a dynamic career community.
- Expand your Network: Meet future leaders who are exploring industries, roles, and paths that may intersect with your own work.
- Access Additional Engagement Opportunities: Be the first to learn about and participate in additional alumni and student programming opportunities.
- Receive Market Insights: Receive periodic updates from MIT Sloan’s Career Development Office on market trends, recruiting insights, and other career-related developments.

How does the program work?
As an SIA, you’ll help guide students and alumni navigating their career paths by:
- Sharing industry insights, trends, and perspectives
- Answering questions about your career path, organization, function, or sector
- Offering candid advice on career exploration, transitions, or professional development
- Helping students and alumni think through options and next steps
SIA conversations are intended to be one-time career conversations, not ongoing mentorship relationships. Some SIAs may choose to stay in touch or offer follow-up conversations, but ongoing engagement is optional and not expected.
While introductions to your personal network are never expected, you are welcome to make them at your discretion. If you do, we encourage clear communication about your introduction process and expectations.
The SIA program is designed to be flexible. There is no minimum number of conversations you are required to hold in a given month.
When you receive a request, you can accept or decline based on your availability. If you accept, the student or alum will follow up to arrange a mutually convenient time.
A few details to know:
- You may receive up to four requests per month (maximum).
- You will have seven days to accept or decline a request.
- Most conversations are approximately 30 minutes.
- You may temporarily pause incoming requests by using the “snooze” feature in Career Central.
- We accept new SIAs year-round and renew participation annually in the summer.
If you know you will be unavailable for a period of time, please “snooze” your SIA designation in Career Central so students and alumni know you are not currently accepting requests.
As an SIA, you may receive requests from students and alumni across MIT Sloan degree programs, including:
- MBA
- LGO
- MSMS
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- Master of Business Analytics (MBAn)
- Sloan Fellows MBA (SFMBA)
- Executive MBA (EMBA)
SIA conversations are directed by the student or alum requesting the meeting. Once you accept a request, they will reach out to coordinate a time that works for both of you.
SIA conversations are typically held virtually. If both you and the requester prefer to meet in person, you are welcome to coordinate an in-person conversation.
You may view the requester’s profile and resume in Career Central before the conversation if you would like to prepare, but formal preparation is not required for SIAs.
