MFin Career Question of the Week: My summer or full-time employer is asking for documentation or has questions about my working status. Where can I find this information?

My summer or full-time employer is asking for documentation or has questions about my working status.  Where can I find this information?

As students prepare for their upcoming employment, the CDO advisors see an increase in requests for specific documentation, CPT/OPT dates or information, and more.  Below are two of the most common requests we see, and where to get what you need:

REQUEST: A document from your university confirming your enrollment or your availability to participate in an internship.

REQUEST: Information on CPT/OPT start dates, eligibility, work authorization, etc.

  • The MFin FAQ section on Navigating Work Authorization (As an International Student) includes guidance on applying for jobs as an international student, example Q&A from employers regarding work authorization, lists of important dates, and more! Please check here and the ISO website as a first step in answering your questions.
  • While CPT/OPT is related to employment, the ISO should be your go-to resource for information related to your work authorization or visa status. They have a handy Knowledge Base as well as a page on Employment information. Alison Day is our MFin ISO Liaison and is happy to help.  Request volume can be high, so please allow a week for her to respond.  The ISO also has in-person walk-in hours or can be reached at or 617-253-3795.

Don’t forget! The MFin FAQs on Your CDO cover these questions and MUCH more! You can quickly access answers to common MFin questions on resumes, job applications, recruiting, interviewing & networking, offer negotiation, navigating work authorization as an international student, and more.  And when in doubt, you can use the search function at the top of the page to search for your topic of interest.  If you can’t find the answer to your question, please reach out to your Career Advisor and we can point you in the right direction or provide customized advice based on your specific situation.
